Traffic on the S.P road seems to be endless. Anirudh checked his watch for the twentieth time in the last fifteen minutes. Had it been a meeting at office, he would have called his colleague and asked to attend for him. This is something that he cannot afford to miss out. That too, giving a reason that there is some last minute work. He cursed himself for no reason in particular. In fact, he did not find anything unnatural in what he does. But, for the person whom he is going to meet matters a lot. He would have to listen to a lengthy lecture if he reasons out that work is always his priority. Anugna, she had been his friend since he was six years old. Friendship is what they are an example for. It’s quite unnatural that a guy and gal could be as close as they are. They know each other better than how much their parents know them. When life brings two persons together and helps in binding the relationships, nothing on the face of the earth can separate.
Traffic is still moving at snail’s pace.
It is right in saying that “If you can not change thing, learn to live with them.” Traffic is one thing that seems to be a mystery to our government. Try to debate on it and the first thing anybody blames is population. True to some extent but it is definitely not the only reason. Sometimes, it feels as though wife and husband should travel together so that half the life that goes in traffic can be utilized as their personal space.
“Thanks god, I’m not married”, thought Anirudh, or else, he will have to listen to all that blabbering. With Anugna it is different. He can tell her to shut her mouth any time. Of course, she does not give him that chance. She reads his mind even before someone says it. The question that why men are worried whether they will get wives as understanding as their close friends is always unanswered.
Anirudh was distracted by the yelling of a car driver. Bus driver from behind is honking as if the car driver stopped there for fun. Everybody knows that it is not fun to stop unless there is something that hinders. Yet, the habit of honking does not go. At least the western world had made it a point that honking is almost not allowed unless the other person does a mistake and you want to warn him. “Oops, I can’t write the whole philosophy of life sitting in this endless traffic day after day” thought Anirudh as everyday.
Finally traffic seemed to clear off. As he approached the coffee day, his eyes searched for Anugna. She is sitting at their favorite place. Over the years, it has become a habit for them to meet away from home and discuss several things about work and life. Words are not enough to express how understanding she could be. He had seen grow through two phases of life of a woman. Her face is very pleasant as usual. There is a special charm about her face. It combines the pleasantness of the setting sun and the serenity of the sea.
“Hi, as usual my apologies”, said Anirudh thinking “had it been some other person, the answer would have been complaining that it is my habit”. But it is Anugna, his friend who knows in and out of the human relationships.
She welcomed him with her brand smile.
That is it, all his misery of traffic had been dumped in recycle bin. That is life, forget the miseries and go ahead. How wonderful it would be if someone helps us through all this.
There were different thoughts crossing through Anugna’s mind.
Years passed like hay. You are born, grow up to take different roles and responsibilities, learn, help, love and be loved, and finally teach someone the same. One thing is for sure, life is a canvas that you have painted. The choice of colors is yours. Finally when the painting is done, people around us look at it and appreciate it. They get inspired. No surprise, your life becomes a role model fro someone else. Anugna does not know who inspired whom, but it is more or less the same kind of result with both of them.
Both of them grew up together. Their houses are in the same neighborhood and families happened to be close. Until engineering they studied in the same college. After completion of the graduation, they choose to go with their passions. Anugna went on to take masters in Business Administration. Anirudh stuck to technical field and completed M.Tech. But one thing common is the standard of institutions they choose. They did not go for anything less than institites having double 'I'. Their parents were completely amazed at the paths choose by their children. Anugna’s parents were doctors and Anirudh’s dad is a business man and mom is a house wife.
“Anirudh, I have to go to Denmark on a small assignment for one month. We got to give a demo of a new business model to a prospective client. The invitation came in a last moment and is a kind of a challenge. I would be starting this Monday.” said Anugna.
“Congratulations, that sounds like a big fish. Are you geared up for the big task? Looks like you have to do a lot of home work everyday”, asked Anirudh.
"Well, as usual management is bound with results than how it works. I’ve been working on building case studies to a model that our company has developed. Monster Mohanty is anyways helping us in this”, replied Anugna.
Mohanty is the manager of Anugna’s team and is quite a capable person. A little over 35 years, he uses his experience to the best level. He climbed the management ladder pretty fast and funny thing is that he already look a 45 year old person. He is like any other manager when it comes to work. Sometimes he sounds like a genius, but most of the times a complete irrational person. People always wonder if he has a split personality. Keep the work aside; you would fine a funny species in him. Nobody laughs at the jokes he cracks. It is really hard to put a smile when other person tells you a pathetic joke. He has got a strange observation power. He can tell which person is on phone for how many hours, who has coffee more than 4 times a day. No surprise even if he keeps track of how many times each person use washroom. With him around, there is nothing like privacy. This makes him a monster. He has got an amazing foresight and that makes him a very efficient manager. Leave alone his attitude towards his subordinates, he is the best. After all, he has got a lot of business to his company.
“Monster at work, God forbids all the forces”, laughed Anirudh.
“Ani, stop being sarcastic. You know how much his presence helps in team”, shot back Anugna with a cute twist in her mouth.
“Yeah yeah, you are a great fan of him, I know. How could I dare to comment on him”, smiled Anirudh.
“Ok, I give up. Both of us know that you don’t mean what you just said. Lets change the topic now”, winked Anugna.
“So who all are going from your team?” The last thing I expect is you are going with Monster”, asked Anirudh with a funny smile.
“I told you to cut the crap now. This time I’m going alone and I guess Mohanty has enough confidence in me. Its just another chance to learn and of course to chill all alone…you know all alone”, laughed Anugna mischievously.
“Now don’t try to make me feel J, which anyways I’m not going to”, justified Anirudh.
“That’s sound so convincing”, winked Anugna.
She looks damn cure when she does that. Her small and sharp nose almost shrinks so much that you need to use a magnifying lens to find where it is.
“Work will be for a few hours each day and the rest I guess is doing a bit of home work. You know, this time we are trying to propose a model to a client who is already established well in the market and…”, Anugna paused after looking at Anirudh staring at a beautiful girl who just entered the café. Usually Anirudh would not get distracted by anything when something related to work is being discussed. Hmmm….this should be a special girl’, Anugna looked at the girl. She was simple and had sharp features. The next thing she expected s small poem from Anirudh. He is too good at that. But this time no response from him.
“Come on, I know the poet in you would have reached the heights by now. You can’t be silent’, asked Anugna.
“No, I can’t do that at least now. How can I talk good things about a girl happily when you are going away for one month? At least, I need to pretend that I’m feeling sad and will miss you right”, Anirudh laughed aloud.
“How funny, as if you think about me all the time. I know your priorities and I do now have any complaints about that. In fact I’ll not miss you”, said Anugna with an inquiring look.
“Friendship is a feeling that the other person is always by your side even when 1000 miles apart”, said Anirudh in a poetic tone.
“Stop acting like a person who cares for relationships. Say something about that gal now”, she like the small lines that he speaks almost spontaneously.
“Anirudh was silent for a few seconds and said,
“I look into your eyes, they take my breath away
I look at your lips, what else is left, I was already dead?”
Anugna couldn’t control her laughter any longer. She is going to miss all this. But she wouldn’t tell him.
Anirudh asked “Did you collect all details about your trip, stay etc or need any help?”
“Ani, forget about it now. Anyways you are going to do it for me for the next two days”.
“Hello, who said I’m gong to be with you and help you for two days? Remember, you went to your Grandma’s place to attend some stupid family show when I had to go onsite? I’m not going to help you, it’s my turn now.”
“Lets see. I know you can’t stop that. Tell me what we are going to do now?” asked Anugna.
“Well that a better thing to think about”, Anirudh studied the menu and as usual wanted to go for his regular caffeine kick.
“Ani, if you do not want to try anything new, why do you read the menu each time?”
“Hmm…I’m just checking if there is any price variation. Morning, I went to fuel refilling and suddenly realized that the prices have gone up by two rupees”, said Anirudh.
“Even if the prices shoot up, we are going to have coffee today. So shall I make it one caffeine kick and Assam tea for myself?” asked Anugna.
“That’s perfect.”
Anugna went to the counter to place the order.
Anirudh looked around. All tables were occupied with perhaps tech savvy’s and college kids. He remembered the star bucks in the US. He used to enjoy the place. Pick a nice book, grab a coffee and have fun reading for hours together. He had finished lot of books like that only. Students used to come to café to discuss their courses. Who know, how many languages like Java would come from the places like this.
Anugna came back to seat and noticed that Anirudh was in deep thought.
“What, gone into thinking of changing the work again?” asked Anugna.
“No, this time, I’m appreciating the world for a change”, said Anirudh.
Both of them finished coffee over a conversation which included the work and happenings the whole week.
“OK, Anu, when shall we start shopping tomorrow?” asked Anirudh.
“Well, someone said that he is not going to help in anyways. What on earth changes his mind? I will come to your house at 11 AM tomorrow” winked Anugna.
“Hello, it’s just that to help. Don’t have to be too sarcastic about that”.
Next two days rolled in no time.
Anirudh gave her a nice card. Neither of them knew that this trip is going to bring a major change in their lives.
Flight just took off. Anugna closed her eyes. Tough schedule ahead. But its interesting though.
Anirudh started his vehicle. Just then his mobile vibrated. He got an SMS. It is from an unknown number. It said “I love you.” He was puzzled for a moment and then shook his head that it must have been unintentional. Anugna would have pulled his leg over the SMS. Thank god, she has left. Or else, she would have teased him until he pleads with her.
The love story begins.....
